What do I Need to Know About Aromatherapy?!

  1. What exactly does the term aromatherapy mean?

Aromatherapy is a branch of phytotherapy. Phytotherapy is a medical discipline that uses plants and plant extracts to preserve health and treat and prevent diseases. In aromatherapy, particular types of extracts from plant material are used, which are called essential or essential oils, and are obtained by steam distillation.

  1. What "branches" of aromatherapy exist and in which spheres are they applicable?

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Beauty is an aesthetic category that traditionally means perfection of harmony. These two definitions make the division within aromatherapy (aromatic therapy)  into medical aromatherapy and holistic aromatherapy. Personally, we think that there is no division, because essential oils do not recognize that division and act on the body level, eliminating symptoms on the body, acting on acute conditions, and on the emotional and mental level we deal with the cause or trigger of a pathological condition or chronic condition.

  1. How do essential oils work?

The main aromatherapy products are essential oils. From a biological point of view, the influence of essential oils is related to the sense of smell, evolutionarily the oldest sense, which affects the body as a whole through the limbic system.

The limbic system includes several parts, responsible for various functions, including emotions, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and the sense of smell. Thus, the limbic system, on which essential oils act directly, is responsible for emotional life and plays a significant role in the formation of memory. For that reason, an essential oils aroma or a scent that we felt a long time ago, can instantly bring back the memory of the period when we felt it.

In addition to the emotional and psychological essential oils correlation, there is another very important aspect, and that is the chemicals in essential oils. In fact, all other aspects of different types of essential oils come from its chemical composition. The chemical composition of essential oils is the one that determines whether the oil will be stimulating, balancing, relaxing and in what capacity we will use it.

  1. What does the chemical composition of essential oils depend on?

The chemical composition of a particular essential oil depends on the chemotype. For example, rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has several chemotypes: 1.8-cineole, verbenone, borneol and camphor. Chemotypes (CT) are plants of the same species that have differently represented secondary metabolites, i.e. essential oils ingredients.

Furthermore, some plant's characteristics result of a certain habitat (appropriate soil moisture, climatic conditions, number of solar days, etc.), so the plants will grow and develop completely as required by their natural habitat. The highest quality volatile oils are obtained from plants harvested in their natural habitat or plants that have been grown by the method of wild growth, biodynamic or organic cultivation.

For therapeutic purposes, it is most desirable to use essential oils obtained from plants grown in some of these ways.

5. What are the benefits of aromatherapy?

Due to the characteristics of essential oils to act as an antibiotic, antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, diuretic, mucolytic, sedative, stimulating, tonic, decongestant, aromatherapy has applications in medicine and cosmetics.

In medicine, aromatherapy is applied dermally, orally, rectally and vaginally, and in cosmetics most often by dermal application. Aromatherapy  oils are widely used in family medicine, health care, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, but also in the techniques of enjoyment and care in beauty salons, wellness and spa centers.
